SoMMet stands for Soil Moisture Metrology. It was a Joint Research Project carried out under EURAMET's European Partnership on Metrology programme.


Metrology for multi-scale monitoring of soil moisture

Many soil moisture observation systems operate at different spatial scales, but their measurements need to be harmonised. SoMMet addressed this challenge by establishing traceable soil moisture measurements across scales. The project ran for 36 months, from October 2022 to September 2025.

Connecting soil moisture measurements across scales

The figure below illustrates how SoMMet connected soil moisture measurements across scales: from sensors measuring a small volume of soil, through cosmic-ray neutron sensing (CRNS) covering larger field areas, to satellite observations at kilometre scales.

To establish metrological traceability, point-scale sensors were calibrated in laboratories specialising in temperature and humidity metrology, while CRNS instruments and their digital-twin models were characterised and validated using neutron metrology. Simulations, soil sampling, reference measurements and field comparisons then provided the basis for harmonising and combining soil moisture data across spatial and temporal scales.
