SoMMet outcomes and impact
SoMMet strengthened the metrological foundation for soil moisture measurements across spatial scales, from point-scale sensors to cosmic-ray neutron sensing (CRNS) and satellite-based observations. During the 36-month project, which ran from October 2022 to September 2025, the consortium developed and evaluated reference methods, transfer standards, calibration and validation practices, comparison methods, and approaches to data harmonisation and fusion.
Main outcomes
-
Metrological calibration and SI traceability for point-scale soil moisture measurements under laboratory conditions
-
Evaluation of the SI traceability and uncertainties of CRNS neutron response functions under laboratory conditions
-
Benchmarking and validation of neutron-transport models and digital twins used to interpret CRNS measurements
-
Calibration and validation practices for CRNS under outdoor conditions
-
Comparison and harmonisation of soil moisture measurement methods with different sensing domains
-
Approaches and good-practice guidance for combining soil moisture observations across spatial and temporal scales
-
Open deliverables, scientific publications, reports, datasets and training materials
These results provide resources for metrology institutes, researchers, observing networks, instrument developers and users. Their longer-term impact will depend on continued uptake, further validation and integration into operational measurement networks, services, standards and technical guidance.
